Green Hosting renewable energy on the internet

Canada's first internet hosting service powered 100% by green energy.

They generate electricity through wind power, which is then fed back into the grid. So while it's not directly powering theit servers / data centre, in my opinion it is better that purchasing carbon credits after the fact.

Acorn Host

I have no experience with them, but from their website:

"Our web hosting company is 100% powered by green power

Acorn Host purchases Green Certificates monthly for the amount of energy that is used to run the servers, office equipment, lights, etc. Renewable Energy Certificates (also known as Green Tags or Green Certificates) are a simple way to effectively power a business (or your home) on 100% renewable energy resources, without changing electricity providers. The idea is to pay for green energy to be put into the power grid equal to the amount of energy you use."

Revealed: The Times Made Up That Stuff About Google And The Tea Kettles

http://www.techcrunch.com

Yesterday an article in The Times of London set the web abuzz over new findings that every Google search contributed 7 grams of CO2 to the atmosphere - half the amount produced when heating a tea kettle (heaven forbid!). I criticized the article for being overly alarmist, with a lack of perspective and possible bias. Google also responded, effectively denouncing the claim.

At the heart of the story was a young physicist named Alex Wissner-Gross, who, according to the article, says “that performing two Google searches uses up as much energy as boiling the kettle for a cup of tea”.

Official Google Blog: Powering a Google search

http://googleblog.blogspot.com

It turns out the article posted yesterday was inaccurate: "Not long ago, answering a query meant traveling to the reference desk of your local library. Today, search engines enable us to access immense quantities of useful information in an instant, without leaving home. Tools like email, online books and photos, and video chat all increase productivity while decreasing our reliance on car trips, pulp and paper."
